Description
Vayu Mudra, also known as the gesture of air, is a yogic hand mudra used to balance the air element in the body. It is practiced by folding the index finger to the base of the thumb and gently pressing it with the thumb, while keeping the other three fingers extended. This mudra helps regulate the Vayu (air) dosha in the body, which is associated with movement and nervous energy.
Vayu Mudra is especially effective in relieving issues related to gas, bloating, joint pain, sciatica, and anxiety. It is believed to calm an overactive mind, reduce restlessness, and help with conditions like Parkinson’s disease or arthritis that stem from excess air movement in the body. Regular practice promotes a sense of grounding and stability.
This mudra can be practiced while sitting, lying down, or even walking—though a calm seated position with focus on breath is ideal. The best time to do Vayu Mudra is early in the morning or whenever you feel anxious, jittery, or experience discomfort due to excess air. Holding the mudra for 15–30 minutes daily, either at once or in intervals, brings the best results.
